+BOX Programs & Initiatives
+BOX is on a mission to deliver healthy food & fresh ideas to those who need it most.

We started working toward that mission in 2020 by partnering with neighborhood schools and community based organizations to deliver CSA-style produce boxes to food insecure children and their families every week. Our fresh ideas didn't end there though. The +BOX team is working on multiple projects and strategic initiatives to build a healthier food assistance system.
+BOX Nutrition Security Program
Our flagship program, launched in April 2020, partners with local farms, food rescue organizations and neighborhood schools to provide children and their families with boxes of fresh, healthy food on a weekly basis. Since launching +BOX, the program has grown to provide essential nutrition to more than 700 families each week, distributing more than 275,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables during 2023 alone.
Every week we source more than 7,000 pounds of fruits, vegetables and whole grains from a network of partners, including local farmers and food rescue organizations, like ProduceGood and Feeding San Diego, to be packed up and prepared for delivery by a team of dedicated volunteers.
Strategic Initiatives
Heading 2
+BOX CONNECT
We are developing new technology to fill the gaping hole between healthy foods and the people who need it. Called “+BOX Connect”, this simple phone app empowers food insecure families to anonymously opt-in to food assistance with no questions asked, breaking down structural barriers and expanding access to the support families need.

Innovative data integrations and automations streamline program administration, simplify enrollment, and provide accurate and timely impact reporting.

The +BOX Connect model to opt-in instead of seek out food assistance will revolutionize accessibility for food insecure families.
Local Greens Project
In 2021, +BOX launched the Local Greens Project to increase support for local farmers by adding high quality farm-fresh produce to the +BOX nutrition security program; uplifting both food insecure families and local farmers.

The Local Greens Project invests in our local agriculture economy by consistently purchasing locally grown produce from small farms and local agriculture producers. In doing so, we're able to provide higher quality, fresher, and more nutrient rich produce to +BOX families, and support a more vibrant, accessible, and sustainable local food system.

With support from the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Local Food Promotion Program, we're developing and testing new models to expand the Local Greens Project in support of both our local food system and communities that often lack access to this type of fresh, locally grown food.
+BOX PRx
In partnership with healthcare providers, +BOX PRx (Produce Prescription) delivers fresh, healthy food to children and adults experiencing nutrition insecurity or high risks of dietary related health problems.

Patients prescribed +BOX PRx by their healthcare provider receive a weekly home delivery of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, plus nutrition information and the educational resources needed to develop long-term healthy eating habits.

+BOX PRx makes it easier for healthcare providers to ensure their patients have consistent and convenient access to the types of food that will drive better health and wellness outcomes.
